Matt Copson – Sob Story

The catalogue Sob Story, co-published by KW and CURA., marks Matt Copson’s first institutional solo exhibition at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. In his hybrid practice—drawing from pop culture, myths, ancient philosophy, and medieval folklore—Copson explores contemporary subjectivity, shaped by constant flux, spectacle, and the economies of attention. His installations are immersive environments, where archetypal figures such as babies, anthropomorphized animals, and folkloric characters explore the sense and nonsense of human existence, mirroring humanity’s relentless drive, inherent vanity, and destructive desires for endless growth.

This monograph reflects on a decade of Copson’s artistic practice, encompassing video works, installations, sculptures, performances, and laser animations. It serves as the first comprehensive publication on his work, featuring contributions by Patrick R. Crowley, Laura McLean-Ferris, and Charlie Fox, alongside an interview with Emma Enderby. The essays and reflections in the book offer a deep insight into Copson’s central themes, methodologies, and narratives, as well as the interplay of mediums within his work.
