The navel serves as a tool of communication (between mother and child), as well as a tool for individualistic introspection (navel gazing), also in regards to the present conversation around individual, identity and society—questions that in a veiled way play a role in Willem de Rooij’s exhibition at KW as well. An important inspiration is “Le nombril du monde,” a 1982 song de Rooij’s mother used to play for him in the 80s by recently deceased French actress Jeanne Moreau with lyrics by Géo Norge.
