Ilit Azoulay: SHIFTING DEGREES OF CERTAINTY

Ilit Azoulay (* 1972 in Israel) bezog im Juni 2013 ein Studio in den KW Institute for Contemporary Art und nutzte in den fünf Monaten ihres Aufenthalts die Möglichkeit, ihr Interesse an der Archäologie der Städte zu vertiefen. In Deutschland sammelte und fotografierte sie Objekte und architektonische Fragmente in Berlin, Weimar, Kulmain, Regensburg, Dessau, Bamberg, Brandenburg, Xanten, Potsdam und Halle sowie in dem Gebäudekomplex der KW selbst. Für ihre Ausstellung SHIFTING DEGREES OF CERTAINTY (14.9.– 16.11.14) in den KW präsentierte Azoulay ihre fotografierten Objekte in einer ortsspezifischen Installation. Die Installation wurde um einen Audioguide erweitert, der die Betrachterinnen und Betrachter in die historischen, persönlichen und eigentümlichen Details des Forschungsprozesses der Künstlerin einweihte.

Die ausstellungsbegleitende, gleichnamige Publikation thematisiert den Archivcharakter des Projektes in einem anderen Format. Sie versammelt neben Abbildungen der gezeigten  Arbeit alle Texte, die in der Ausstellung als Tonspur zu hören sind, und wird im Rahmen der Reihe KW POCKET von Spector Books, Leipzig herausgegeben.

Ilit Azoulay (born 1972 in Israel) moved into her studio at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in June, 2013, and used her five-month residency to develop her interest in the archeology of cities. During her travels throughout Germany, she collected and photographed objects and architectural fragments in Berlin, Weimar, Kulmain, Regensburg, Dessau, Bamberg, Brandenburg, Xanten, Potsdam, and Halle, as well as in the KW building itself. For her exhibition SHIFTING DEGREES OF CERTAINTY (14.9.– 16.11.14) at KW, Azoulay presented the photographed objects in a site-specific installation. Alongside, an audio guide allowed the viewer insight into the artist’s research process and the historical, personal, and idiosyncratic details it uncovered.

A publication of the same title accompanies the exhibition and examines the project’s archival character in another format. It contains images of each part of the work on view, alongside all texts from the installation’s audio guide, and is published as part of the series KW POCKET by Spector Books, Leipzig.
